An area of coastal wetland with saltwater lagoons, mangrove swamps and scrub jungle, the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is an excellent place for bird-watching. Among the birds that can be commonly sighted here are spot-billed pelicans, painted storks and crested fish eagles as well as egrets, lapwings and plovers. A greater variety of bird life can, however, be spotted during the winter months, from November to March, when the area is visited by a large number of migratory birds. The sanctuary also boast a beautiful strip of beach.
It is possible to arrange bird-watching tours at the village of Hungama that lies 6 km southwest of the sanctuary. more
