Monaragala, meaning “the rock of peacock landing”, derives its name from the imposing and densely forested Peacock Rock that it nestles beneath. A typical Sri Lankan town, Monaragala offers some good nature walks through the surrounding countryside, which is surprisingly lush. A diverse variety of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, peacocks and deer can also be seen along these walks.
Monaragala makes a good base for exploring the stunning Buddhist statues in Maligawila and also serves as a gateway to Arugam Bay, one of Sri Lanka’s best surfing spots. more
